Come Run with R!
Today we will focus on another one of the English alphabet letters – the letter R. This very active 18th letter can be written as capital ‘R’ or small ‘r’. You may notice that capital ‘R’ looks like it is ready to take a step, while small ‘r’ looks like a hook.
Letter R – PRONUNCIATION AND USAGE
Combining the letter ‘r’ with the letter ‘e’ means to do something over again. For example, the word re-peat says to do something again. Re-read means to read a passage again. Likewise, we can re-cook or re-heat a dish before we re- eat it.
When we pronounce the word ‘are’ we make the sound of the letter ‘r’. But when we combine ‘r’ with other English alphabet letters we can change the sound of the letter ‘r’. In the following sentence, see how many different ‘r’ sounds you can hear: “The art teacher drew a cartoon rabbit on the board”
Animals can make the sound of ‘r’ too. A dog or lion or tiger ‘growls’ when it gets angry and we hear the strong “grr” sound. Many animal names contain ‘r’, such as rats, roosters, rabbits, racoons, rattlesnakes, or rhinoceros. Can you think of others?
In conclusion, you should be able to decide which of these questions is “Right” or “Wrong”:
- Most students learn the three “R’s” – reading writing and arithmetic.
- There are five “R’s” in the word “refrigerator”.
- On a baseball scoreboard, ‘R’ stands for runs scored.
Right or Wrong, the letter “R” can be fun. Rip Rap, our story is done!
